I was flying to Berlin after a long time from Heathrow Terminal 5. Usually, I would never book a Club Europe (business class) ticket for short haul flight but because I was booking the flight quite late, everything was expensive and no other times suit me. I ended up booking Club Europe for the flight to Berlin and economy for the trip back.
You can enjoy the video from the trip here:
The whole trip cost me 23500 Avios + £85, for two people. Considering the prices for similar flights and the need for check-in luggage, I was ok with this Avios redemption.
However, I still believe that taking the business class for this short flight is a waste of money or miles. Unless you really have to.
At least I was ready to check out the British Airways Galleries Club Lounge at Heathrow Terminal 5.
Considering how many people in the UK have status with BA, plus that Terminal 5 is a BA terminal, I was expecting Galleries Lounges to be pretty busy even this early in the morning. And I was right. It wasn’t as bad at the beginning, but the lounge filled pretty fast. I found the lounge big and noisy. That didn’t really go well with my ultimate goal of finding the quietest and most relaxing places at the airports, so I had to move on.
Luckily, I knew that only a few months ago the new Plaza Premium lounge opened in Terminal 5.
At the moment there are not many options how to get into this lounge.
By showing American Express Platinum card
By showing a DragonPass lounge club card
By paying cash ($49 for 2 hours booked online, $79 for 5 hours, or using LoungeBuddy for $45)
I used the American Express Platinum way. I could take +1 on my card which was nice, considering I was with my wife. However, she has her Platinum Companion card, so we would be ok anyway.
I fell in love with this lounge instantly. Because the lounge wraps around the edge of the terminal building it is very open and light. It was a beautiful sunny morning, and the energy in the lounge was terrific. What an excellent start to the long day.
The food selection was smaller than in the Galleries Lounge but had all the essential ingredients for the healthy nutritious breakfast 🙂 we had a solid breakfast which was a good move because the food, later in the airplane, was horrible.
The lounge was beautiful, quiet and relaxing. Everything was clean. Staff was super friendly and attentive.
But the deciding factor why I love this lounge is people or the lack of them. The lounge has been almost empty during the whole time I was there, so it fits all my boxes for quiet and relaxing space where you can enjoy your food or coffee before your flight. I can tell that this will be my go-to lounge at Heathrow Terminal 5 from now on.
Or, at least, until they will change something and more people will get access to it.
